Tour of Ireland 4: Deadly drama and filmmaking history

In the fourth chapter of The Tour of Ireland project, Torsten Pamp keeps going south. This time from Ballybunion to Tralee.   Tour_of_Ireland

— I have designed the front nine but it is absolutely certain that God designed the back nine, Arnold Palmer said at the inauguration of the 18 Tralee golf holes.

The members dispute whether it’s God or Palmer that did the best job. But in terms of beauty and drama, the last half is of absolute top class.

Tralee is a fairly new track, completed in 1984. It is laid out at the tip of a peninsula, and is played along the ocean on both sides of the cape. Sand dunes along to the sea give the track its character.

The first nine holes are located on a slight slope and rather plain, with a wide playing field and is forgiving off the fairway. The last nine are embedded in the dunes, and you play between the mounds and over the deep ravines.  Actually, it’s not very different from the links just north of here, and that we visited in the third chapter.

On our last visit to Tralee, it was as if God meant the difficulties already in place were not sufficient. The sky had opened, and for the first time in several (weeks of) visits, we finally got to experience real Irish weather. The rain swept almost parallel to the ground. The BBC had invited Britain’s sports stars at this year’s event, but there were not many that completed the round. Most stood in the locker room after nine holes, trying to dry their garments with the blow drier.

On our last visit, God didn't think the punishment from the course itself was enough. He threw the most Irish of wheater upon us.

Even the big stars of the movies have discovered Tralee. When Oscar-winning «Ryan’s daughter» was filmed here in 1968, most of scenes were shot on the beach along the 2nd hole.

And behind the tee on tje 15th hole, part of Ireland’s history was settled: Sir Roger Casement was a British diplomat, but also an Irish nationalist. During the First World War, he tried to get German help in the Irish struggle for freedom. Somehow, his duplicity revealed. So when he stepped ashore in 1916 at Tralee’s cape from a German submarine, he was arrested immediately and hanged a few months later.

Stay in a B&B or a castle?

The road from Tralee to the West Coast’s southernmost links courses often becomes a detour through the tourist village of Dingle and Slieve Mish Mountains. There are lots of B&Bs to choose from. The alternative, a bit inland, is equally enticing. Ballyseede Castle from the 1500s was involved in the bloody battles of the British Crown. For one of the owners, it was really bad. The 16th Earl was beheaded and his head was on display in London. The castle is now converted into a luxury hotel where weddings succeed each other. And with a gourmet restaurant of class …
