Torsten Pamp goes north in this chapter of the Tour of Ireland Project, and takes us to Royal County Down.
The north coast is a dream come true for link lovers with three golfing areas where the courses are situated almost side by side. And the roads are scenic.
There’s no border any more. We hardly notice that we leave the Republic of Ireland and enter Northern Ireland. It’s not more than an hour since we picked up the rental car at Dublin airport, loaded with maps, golf clubs and euros.
And where the border is, according to the map, the money exchange offices pop up. Oops! This is the UK. And the currency is British pounds. However, that’s the only difference we notice on the trip along the coast.
When we drive into the century-old, historic castle-like golf hotel Slieve Donnard outside Newcastle, newly polished luxury glitters. A few hundred meters away is the island’s golf greatness, Royal County Down, with a newly built clubhouse. As if it’s not enough that the course ever so often is being appointed one of the world’s best.
The clubhouse is impressive – but still not in the same way as the golf course. On the sandy soil along Dundrum Bay, nature and old Tom Morris collaborated creating a crown jewel. Some of the holes are embedded in the sea of yellow-flowered gorse. Others go in the valleys between the hills with the tall beach grass. In the leading edges of the bunkers, the arching grass folds like a wild pile above the sand. And nice, undulating greens, some slightly elevated, immediately sends back a bad shot to the fairway. This is hard – and hardly gets easier when winds sweep along the beach and make the long holes even longer. It’s a great track, but not as part of a first golf trip for an inexperienced golfer.
Royal County Down is a great track. But maybe not for the inexperienced golfer on his first golfing trip.
— Well. Did you get blown out?
It is more a rhetorical question, or a statement, from the hotel’s gentleman; Gerry, after the round. Then he starts to talk about the celebrities they’ve had as guests: Charlie Chaplin, King Leopold, Alf Ramsay, Jackie Charlton, Michael Jordan, Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Arnold Palmer and others, and others again.
— And Tiger Woods was here. He arrived in a helicopter, as so many others, played in a four ball with some friends and disappeared again.

Gränslöst linksparadis
Gränsen är borta. Vi märker knappt att vi lämnar Republiken Irland och kör in i Nordirland. Det är en dryg timme sedan vi satte oss i hyrbilen på flygplatsen i Dublin, laddade med kartor, golfklubbor – och hela reskassan i euro.
Men just där gränsen går enligt kartan, dyker de upp – växlingskontoren. Hoppsan! Det här är ju Storbritannien. Och valutan är pund. Det är dock den enda skillnaden vi skulle komma att märka på hela turen längs kusten.
När vi kör in till hundraåriga, anrika slottsliknande golfhotellet Slieve Donnard utanför Newcastle blänker det av nyputsad lyxig kultur. Och ett par hundra meter bort ligger öns golfstorhet Royal County Down med ett nyligen tillbyggt klubbhus. Som om det inte räckte med att ständigt utses till en av världens bästa banor.
The ever present gorse protects the greens and the fairways, and adds yet another dimension to Royal County Down.
Klubbhuset är imponerande – men ändå inte lika mycket som golfbanan. På sandmarken längs Dundrum Bay har naturen och gamle Tom Morris samarbetat om en kronjuvel. Vissa hål ligger helt inbäddade i hav av gulblommande ärttörnen. Andra går i dalgångarna mellan kullar med det höga strandgräset. I bunkrarnas framkanter viker sig det halvmeterlånga gräset som en vild lugg över sanden. Och fint undolerade greener, några lätt upphöjda skickar omedelbart tillbaka ett dålig inspel till fairway. Det här är svårt – och blir knappast lättare när vindarna sveper längs stranden och gör de långa hålen än längre. En fantastisk bana. Men egentligen inte något som en otränad ska inleda en golftour med – snarare spara som en lysande avslutning.
— Nå. Gick ni på en blåsning därute?
Det är mer en retorisk fråga eller ett konstaterande som hotellets gentleman Gerry möter med efter rundan. Och sen berättar han om kändisarna de haft som gäster, Charlie Chaplin, Kung Leopold, Alf Ramsay, Jack Charlton, Michael Jordan, Michael Douglas, Chatherine Zeta-Jones, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Arnold Palmer med flera, med flera.
— Jo, och Tiger Woods var här. Han kom som så många andra i helikopter, gick en fyrboll med några kompisar och försvann bort igen.
