In this chapter of the Tour of Ireland Project, Torsten Pamp takes us to the links land of Graeme McDowell and Darren Clark at Royal Portrush.
From Templepatrick the road winds north to the next of the Irish Crown Jewels, Royal Portrush. The scenic route goes up to, and then along, the coast. There is hardly any traffic at all until a coach just before Portrush pops up and turn towards Bushmills.
The whiskey distillery is open for visits, with guided tour of the factory and testing of different vintages.
A few minutes later, after a curve on the height above the sea, a golf hotel with the ultimate view appears.
Royal Portrush Golf Club, as Harry Colt regarded as his masterpiece, is widespread along the beach below.
Ocean, sky, dunes, fairways and greens … with the mountains and Portrush town as a backdrop. That is the true beauty of Royal Portrush Golf Club.
Almost like a valley, separated from the water only by the first row of dunes, fairways and greens shine like angry green lines and dots in the dune landscape. From above she is a beauty, from the ground the tees and fairways are a thrilling challenge.
Actually one hole is enough to justify the trip. The 14th, Calamity Corner, is a par 3 of 180 meters from the club tee. We play straight over a deep ravine at an oblique elevated green that is totally exposed to the wind. But here are 17 other major challenges.
No wonder the club’s most famous member, Darren Clark, is happy to promote the course as one of the world’s best whenever he gets the chance to do so. He managed to attract The Irish Open, with 35.000 spectators on the final days in a small town with 6000 inhabitants. Hoping that The Open will one day be back on his beloved track. Given the praise that was poured over the course from the European Tour players, he has every reason to hope so.
Links land like links land is supposed to be; the beauty of Royal Portrush is stunning.
That there is a certain rivalry between the Royal courses in Ireland, we noticed the first time we came to Portrush. We had not intended to play, just check out the routing.
— What? the club manager bursted out.
— You have played County Down but consider skipping Portrush? You cannot. What are your plans for today?
Our reply was that we unfortunately had a tee off time at Portstewart after lunch.
— Then I will call them and check if you can play right away. That will give you time to get back here afterwards for a three o’clock tee time.
Sometimes, a day at work can be really nice…

En juvel för The Open
Från Templepatrick går vägen rakt norrut till nästa av Irlands kronjuveler, Royal Portrush. Det är scenic route både upp till och sen längs kusten. Det är knappast någon trafik alls på vägen men strax före Portrush dyker en turistbuss upp och svänger av mot – Bushmills. Whiskeydestilleriet är öppet för besök, guidad rundvisning med provning av fabrikens olika årgångar.
Några minuter senare direkt efter ett vägkrön på höjden ovan havskanten dyker ett golfhotell upp – med tidernas utsikt.
The dunes shelter the fairways. But also they breed swirling winds that have a tendency to inflict your ball flight in the less favorable way.
Utbredd längs stranden nedanför kustvägen ligger Royal Portrush, golfbanan, som Harry Colt själv ansåg var hans stora mästerverk.
Nästan som en dalgång, avskild från vattnet endast av den första raden sanddyner, lyser fairways och greener upp som ilsket gröna streck och prickar i dynlandskapet. Från ovan en skönhet – från markplanets tees och fairways en nervkittlande utmaning. Det hade räckt med hål 14, Calamity corner – en par 3 på 180 meter från klubbtee. Från tee längst ut vid havskanten spelar vi rakt över en djup sänka mot en snedställd green högre upp och totalt utsatt för vind. Men här finns 17 andra, stora utmaningar.
Inte så konstigt att klubbens mest kände medlem, Darren Clark, gärna slår ett slag för banan som en av världens bästa. Han lyckades ju få hit Irish Open – med 35 000 åskådare finaldagarna i en by med 6 000 invånare – och hoppas att The Open en dag ska vara tillbaka på banan. Med tanke på lovorden som haglade över banan från Europatourspelarna har han all anledning att hoppas.
Att det finns en viss rivalitet mellan Royalbanorna på Irland märkte vi första gången vi kom till Portrush. Vi hade inte tänkt spela, skulle bara kolla in banan.
— Va, sa klubbchefen, ni har spelat County Down men tänker hoppa över Portrush. Det går inte. Vad är era planer för i dag?
Vi förklarar att vi hade starttid på Portstewart efter lunch.
— Då ringer jag dem och ser om ni kan spela där direkt. Så hinner ni hit efteråt och kan gå ut här vid tretiden.
Ibland kan en dag på jobbet bli riktigt trevlig…
