Camiral reopens both courses after €7m upgrade ahead of 2031 Ryder Cup

Camiral has reopened its Stadium and Tour Courses after a €7 million upgrade, including Bermuda grass intended to reduce water consumption by 33 per cent.

Camiral in Girona has reopened its Stadium and Tour Courses following a €7 million programme centred on playing conditions, water use and service enhancements as the Spanish resort prepares to host the 2031 Ryder Cup.

Camiral has completed a €7 million upgrade across its two golf courses, reopening the Stadium Course and Tour Course as preparations continue for the 2031 Ryder Cup.

The work includes a move to warm-season Bermuda grass on both layouts. According to the resort, the change is intended to maintain course conditioning while cutting water consumption by 33 per cent. New machinery and technology have also been introduced, while the greenkeeping team has grown from 35 to 50 people.

The announcement is as much about the everyday visitor as the match seven years away. Camiral has appointed Albert Guerrero as golf customer services manager and introduced personalised services and VIP golf packages linking Hotel Camiral, the clubhouse and both courses.

Two courses, two different propositions

The Stadium Course is the resort’s championship test, while the Tour Course provides a more forgiving companion round. Together, they have helped establish Camiral as a regular venue for significant professional events; the resort says both courses are ranked among Spain’s top 10 by Golf Digest.

Camiral opened in 1999 under the name PGA Catalunya and was later rebranded. The resort is set among pine forest and rolling hills near Girona, with its two courses forming part of a 540-hectare estate. Camiral, a Luxury Resort in Girona

That setting matters to the current programme. The resort presents the grass conversion and expanded maintenance operation as measures designed to balance tournament-ready standards with a lower water requirement, rather than simply a cosmetic refresh.

“As the 2031 Ryder Cup venue, we continue to invest in our world-class courses, presenting tournament quality standards all year round, while achieving the sustainability objectives at the heart of our business,” said David Plana, CEO of Camiral.

A Girona base for a golf break

For travelling golfers, the appeal is a stay built around 36 holes rather than a one-course stop. Hotel Camiral is the resort’s five-star accommodation, with the four-star Lavida Hotel offering a second option. Camiral also places Girona and Barcelona within reach, adding a city dimension to a Costa Brava golf itinerary. Camiral, a Luxury Resort in Girona

The resort has released a short film featuring director of golf Flavio Papa and golf course superintendent Alfredo Álvarez, who oversaw the work on the two courses. Its focus is the long road to 2031, but the immediate news is simpler: both courses are back open, with a revised turf programme at the heart of the upgrade.
