Tour of Ireland 10: A bunker hell, according to the envious neighbour

Torsten Pamp’s Tour of Ireland project rolls on, this time northeast of Dublin to Carton House, the venue for The Irish Open.

Tour_of_IrelandWith the Earl of Kildare’s 18th century castle Carton House, where Queen Victoria had her own bedroom, as a backdrop, Mark O’Meara and Colin Montgomery each has designed a golf course.

O’Meara’s routing is a fine parkland course in the hills. However, it’s Montgomery’s kind of inland links layout that has attracted the European Tour on several occasions. Monty has gone further than most of his course architect predecessors, and has peppered the track with some 150 bunkers. Most are between three and six feet deep, and are placed in groups on the fairway and around the greens.

Most of the 150 bunkers are three to six feet deep. Have fun!

«A bunker hell,» the members of the neighbouring club said. However, the Monty course has been highly acknowledged by the golfing press. Golf World awarded it «The best new course in 2004», while Golf Digest ranked it among the top 10 in Ireland. The course is a fantastic experience, for everyone but the high handicapper.
