In this issue of the Tour of Ireland Project, Torsten Pamp explores the venue for the 2011 Solheim Cup: Killeen Castle.
Attracted by the television broadcasts from Killeen Castle, we drive north from Dublin – to the course that managed to get both the Solheim Cup and the Ladies Irish Open in three consecutive years.
We’ve barely unloaded the golf bags from the car before we get yet another history lesson from our Irish friend.
— You can thank Robin Hood’s nemesis Prince John for the castle there. And for the recent financial crisis, that it looks like it does, he said with a shrewd smile.
— Since the French army won the Battle of Hastings and invaded England, estates around the kingdom were awarded to the French nobles. When Prince John became king, he continued to give land away. Geoffrey de Cusack from the neighbourhood of Bordeaux got this land and a defensive fortress. In 1181 Geoffrey replaced the fortress with a castle in stone, and became lord of Killeen. After that, the castle beacme manor for many lords, barons and dukes, and got involved in religion struggle in Cromwell’s time. In the modern era, it was sold to a businessmen and horse breeder. After that, an arson attack in 1981 left the building to its fate for a few years.
— But in the investment heat of Ireland, it became interesting again. Large capital owners got the idea to turn the castle could into a luxurious hotel with a golf course. Killeen Castle won the yearlong battle to stage the Solheim Cup. And Jack Nicklaus designed the golf course, which was completed in 2008.
While my tutoring Irish friend gave his lesson, we had walked around the clubhouse and reached the 18th green in front of the castle. There we understood what he meant by the financial crisis. Instead of a welcoming doorman, black-clad security guards in front of the door made sure no one entered. The funders had receded. The castle was deserted.
Just as empty as it had been during the Solheim Cup.
Inside, scaffolding was held in place by huge iron beams. Provisional stairs connected the various floors. Otherwise, things were spooky. Birds and partying youths with spray cans had decorated floors and walls.
— Come back in a year or so, and the hotel will be up and running, my friend said with that Irish understatement you never know how to interpret.
If and when ready, hopefully the hotel will be in the same league as the golf course. Because even though the links courses are our main objective for going to Ireland, Nicklaus has laid out 18 lovely parkland holes around the castle, well worth a visit.

Vi hinner knappt plocka golfbagarna ur bilen förrän vi får en ny historielektion av vår irländske vän.
– Du kan tacka Robin Hoods ärkefiende prins John för att slottet finns – och de senaste årens finanskris för att det ser ut som det gör, sa han med ett finurligt leende.
– För så här är det, fortsatte han. Sedan den franska hären vunnit slaget vid Hastings och invaderat England delades egendomar runt om i hela öriket ut till franska adelsmän. När prins John blivit kung fortsatte han med att skänka bort landet. Geoffrey de Cusack från trakten av Bordeaux fick den här marken och en försvarsfästning. 1181 ersatte Geoffrey fästningen med ett slott i sten och blev lord av Killeen. Efter det var slottet herresäte för en mängd lorder, baroner och hertigar och inblandat i religionskampen på Cromwells tid för att i modern tid bli sålt till affärsmän och hästuppfödare. Efter en mordbrand 1981 lämnades byggnaden åt sitt öde i några år.
– Men i ett investeringshett Irland blev det naturligtvis intressant på nytt. Stora kapitalägare bestämde att slottet skulle göras om till ett superlyxigt hotell med golfbana. Därför vann Killeen Castle den ett år långa striden om att få arrangera Solheim Cup. Och Jack Nicklaus fick rita golfbanan som blev klar 2008.
Medan min irländske vän hållit sin lektion hade vi gått runt klubbhuset och kommit till 18:e green och stod mitt framför slottet. Då förstod vi vad han menade med finanskrisen. I stället för en välkomnande livréklädd hotelldörrvakt stod bevakningsbolagets svartklädde väktare framför porten och såg till att ingen tog sig in. Finansiärerna hade dragit sig tillbaka.
Slottet låg öde.
Lika tomt hade det varit under Solheim Cup.
Invändigt hölls byggställningar på plats av enorma järnbalkar Provisoriska trappor förband de olika våningarna. I övrigt var allt spöklikt. “Dekorationerna” på golv och väggar hade skapats av fåglar och festande ungdomar med sprayburkar.
– Lugn bara, sa min vän på lättsamt irländskt sätt, kom tillbaka om något år så är nog hotellet fixat och klart.
Förhoppningsvis då i klass med golfbanan. För även om vi åker till Irland för linksbanorna så har Nicklaus gett marken runt slottet 18 fina parkhål som är väl värda ett besök.
Om inget annat så för att kolla hur många slag efter Sophie Gustafson, Laura Davis och Catriona Matthews man är.
