Tour of Ireland 2: A vicar astray

In the second chapter of The Tour of Ireland project, Torsten Pamp takes us the half hour drive from Lahinch to Doonbeg.

Tour_of_IrelandDoonbeg is enthroned as the new greatness of Irish golf, and came around when everyone thought there were no more beaches to build a links golf course. However, Greg Norman was given the go ahead to lay out a path in a dune landscape where farmers previously collected sand for their construction needs.

Doonbeg has become a haven of luxury in terms of clubhouse as well as hotel and apartments. It is a complete golf resort, but with the old Irish appearance, intended for multi-millionaires.

«Here you’ll stay with people of the same variety from all over the world,» according to the advertising.

Norman laid out the path without any intervention in the dune landscape. This means there are some walking distance from green to next tee between a few of the holes. But for once, they serve as necessary breaks to gain your breathing. The rugged, high dunes offer play from elevated tees out between, or over, dunes with half meter tall grass. Some blind shots, a few surprises behind the next hill.

Doonbeg’s opening par 5 was voted the world’s most beautiful opening hole by CNN. The hole starts the TV-station’s dream course selection consisting of the 18 best holes in the world.

To eliminate too much searching of stray balls, the starter Bryan proposes, as a local «rule», that after one minute of searching, you can drop a new ball in the area, and play on with one penalty stroke. But the biggest surprise is the green on hole 12. Here, there is a bunker in the middle of the green – mostly invisible playing your approach shot.

— There are players who have been frustrated after nine – and some have even thrown away clubs with the shafts already bent. But when they arrive after 18 holes, they are still in a good mood.

Doonbeg’s starter Bryan takes the time to chat with and entertain almost every player before tee-off.

From the 14th tee there is a lovely view over the Doonbeg Bay with the clubhouse in the background.

The Old Member, John Galvin, was recruited from Lahinch as caddie master, and is contributing with his stories. If you find it difficult to find your way around, or regret that you did not take a caddie so that you would know where to aim your drive, John has a comforting story:

“It is not only the Lord’s ways that are inscrutable. It is now also his servants. Our local vicar came one day to the club with a brand new car. He told he would just take it out for a short ride on the course. In the club it was assumed that he would drive on the cart paths. But after a while the vicar came walking back to the clubhouse.

— Where is your new car?

— It remains in of the bunkers…

Party break

The city of Galway proves to be an excellent starting point for the golf tour on the West Coast. It’s an idyllic and colourful city with countless entertainment events. When we arrive, the cultural festival in full swing. The main street is crowded, and lots of people in the taverns and the outdoor cafes. And because this is Ireland, there is music, music and more music. It’s the absolutely perfect place to start the tour or to take a break from the golf.

Norman lade ut banan helt utan nya ingrepp i dynlandskapet.

The bunkers are hard to get out of. Whether it is your ball or the vicar's car that is stuck in it it.
