New Golf Event Marks 45th Anniversary of Tom Weiskopf’s 1973 Open Victory

Italy’s only private golf club has announced the inaugural Weiskopf Invitational, a new golf event to be hosted by former Open Champion and acclaimed course architect Tom Weiskopf. Members and guests are invited.

The exclusive two-day event on May 18-19, 2018, will mark the 45th anniversary of Weiskopf’s Open victory. Which was one of five titles he won during an extraordinary season that elevated him to the top three players in the world.

It will also serve as a homecoming to Castiglion del Bosco, Weiskopf’s only course design in Continental Europe and regarded as a landscape masterpiece (photo above by Aidan Bradley).

David Waters, General Manager of The Club at Castiglion del Bosco, said:

“Opened in 2011, the golf course at Castiglion del Bosco is one of the finest private courses in Europe. The genius of Tom’s design is that the holes are naturally blended into the soft curves and contours of the hills and grasslands. As Tom himself said, ‘It looks as if the course has been there 100 years’.”

Events around the world hosted by The Club

David Waters also told that The Club at Castiglion del Bosco is honored that Tom Weiskopf will be returning to Tuscany to host this international event. The tournament will become an annual fixture for members, guests and invitees.

The Weiskopf Invitational is one of a series of exclusive international golf and wine events around the world hosted by Castiglion del Bosco’s founders and proprietors, Massimo and Chiara Ferragamo.

Tom Weiskopf told he’s very much looking forward to returning to Castiglion del Bosco, playing some golf with the members and spending time with his wife, Laurie, in what he describes as “one of the most beautiful places in the world.”

“It was a privilege to work with Massimo Ferragamo to create a golf course on this very special estate. The Tuscan landscape has everything an architect would wish for: mature trees, undulation and water features. It turned out to be a spectacular golf course.”

The Club at Castiglion del Bosco is Italy’s only private golf club, offering members fine golf and wine experiences. Including access to the estate’s winery, producer of prestigious Brunello wines.

Golf and wine go hand-in-hand at Castiglion del Bosco and the golf course includes a short 19th challenge hole, The Brunello Hole, where members play for a Magnum of Brunello before retiring to the clubhouse.
